Guidelines to consider as you choose a
college
- Each college has its own policy for
students with disabilities
- The first step for parents/students to
take the disability documentation to the
Disability Office at the college the student
hopes to attend. Documentation of the
disability must be clearly diagnosed by a
professional within the last 3 years. (The
existence of a previous IEP or 504 Plan is NOT
enough).
- Colleges are not required to fundamentally
alter the nature of their program (class
requirements or test content).
- Colleges must provide appropriate academic
adjustments supported by disability
documentation but do NOT provide specially
designed instruction or alter the essential
requirements of the course.
- Students with disabilities need to
research services available, procedures to
obtain services, and ask questions!
