Dear Liberty Families,

We wanted to thank everyone who contributed to a great Homecoming week.  Students, staff, parents and community members pitched in throughout the week in so many ways to help celebrate Liberty High School.  Thank you for your continued support.

Below are a few items to help keep you informed:

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

There is still time to sign up for the 2009 ASVAB at Liberty High School.  Students should see Mrs. Barclay in the Counseling Office to sign up through Wednesday afternoon.

Who:                Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors who are interested in exploring their future career choices and would like more information about their own aptitudes and abilities should take this test.  Students DO NOT need to be interested in a career in the military in order to take this test.  Test scores are NOT released to the military.

What:               The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test battery that assesses vocational, academic, English and math knowledge.

When:              Test date - October 29th,  7:30 am;  Interpretation session date – November 19th, 7:30 am.

Attending the testing session and the interpretation session WILL NOT count against a students absences at the end of the semester.

Where:             Liberty High School Library

Why:                The ASVAB can help provide career assessment and direction, combining student’s aptitude scores and interests.  The ASVAB can help answer questions like “What am I really good at?” and “What occupations might offer me job satisfaction?”  The ASVAB can qualify a student for certain jobs and training in the Armed Forces.  And the test is free!

If you have questions, please contact Kay Hutchinson, Counselor at 425-837-4868.

World Language Tutoring is now available

Thank you to the Issaquah School Foundation for their financial support of our after-school tutoring.    We are pleased to announce that beginning this Thursday, October 29th, we will have help for students who need assistance in World Language.   French and Spanish students who are in need of help are encouraged to come to the LHS library each Thursday from 2:30 – 3:30 to work with Madam Duran or Mr. Hausenfluck.  Is your student taking Japanese?  Mr. Harvey is already offering help after school for those students.

Senior Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, October 28th and Wednesday, November 4th, before school in the Liberty library

Senior Interviews provide an opportunity for our students to articulate their future career and educational plans and to gain some valuable interview practice.   Please understand that this graduation requirement is mandated by the Washington State Legislature.   Senior interviews are also the final required element of the Issaquah School District’s Culminating Project.   Students must complete this requirement or they will not be eligible to graduate in June.

Interview times and dates have been pre-assigned so ask your senior when they have been scheduled.  Seniors have been given guidelines concerning dress and interview conduct.  Seniors are required to dress in a professionally casual manner at a minimum!

We are very appreciative of the eighty (80) community and staff members who have volunteered to assist in this effort.   If you have questions/concerns regarding the Senior Interviews, contact Dr. Denton @ 425-837-4802.

Math Conversation Nights

In light of the current geometry and algebra curriculum adoption process, administrators and math teachers invite all parents to come and learn about the rationale for the recommended curriculum, Discovering Mathematics.  This is a comprehensive effort to understand families’ math experience in the Issaquah School District.  We will test-drive the recommended materials; hear the results of District-wide parent and student math surveys; and request feedback about what type of math supports students need.

The math-conversation nights are 7-9 pm -  Tuesday, Oct. 27th, at Issaquah High; Tuesday, Nov. 3rd at Liberty High; and Monday, Nov. 16th, at Skyline High. More information about the geometry and algebra curriculum adoption, including FAQs and links to the new state standards is available online.

Update on H1N1 virus

We have not experienced any abnormalities in the severity of symptoms or the number of students absent for a flu season, but the heightened public focus on good hygienic practices warrants another reminder: Please evaluate your student every morning and make sure they stay home if they exhibit signs of influenza or other sicknesses (until 24 hours after a fever has passed). To stop the spread of germs and viruses, everyone should wash hands frequently and properly; get vaccinated for H1N1 and the seasonal flu; and cover coughs with a tissue or sleeve.  More information is available on the Issaquah School District and Seattle-King County Public Health websites.

District officials continue to be in contact with health experts at the regional and state level to make sure we are following best health and notification practices. We are also working with custodians to be extra vigilant about cleaning and sanitizing our facilities. All advice from health officials is the same: H1N1 is a flu subtype comparable to other seasonal flu strains we experience annually—but keep vigilant and follow good hygienic practices in your household.  Thank you.
