Liberty ENews: August 24, 2007

Schedule Changes: After Patriot Days, I wanted to remind you of the schedule change process. If you have not reviewed your students schedule with them, please take a moment to do this. We are asking that all changes to schedules be made prior to the first day of school. Once school starts, all changes will need an administrator's approval. Our goal is to significantly reduce the number of class changes in order to maximize the learning time for each student and teacher. Now is an open time to make those class changes. Please go on Family Access to make sure the schedule looks good to you. If you would like to change a class, please contact the counseling office. Seniors, please contact your counselor.  All other grades, please contact Ms. Riding or your counselor. Go to www.liberty.issaquah.wednet.edu and click on the counseling tab for e-mail and phone numbers in the counseling office.

Family Access: If you need your Family Access login, please e-mail our registrar Leanne Riding at ridingl@issaquah.wednet.edu. She can send the information to you electronically or feel free to come into the counseling office. Reminder, Family Access is how you and your student will also review your student's grades and attendance.

Family Access Clarification: I received a few questions during Patriot Days asking, can siblings view each others grades if your family has only one account in Family Access? Currently, we have released parent login and passwords to parents. We will also release individual student login and password to each student by Sept 18th. Each student will have their own login and password. After Sept. 18th, if you have multiple children enrolled in school under your Family Access account, you may want to change your password. This will prevent one of your kids from viewing their sibling's grades, attendance, etc., and hopefully create less chaos in your home.

LHS Administrative Team and counselors: We had a change from last year with our Liberty Administrative team. Andrea Hillman is now our new Dean of Students/Activities Director/Administrative Intern. She also will teach two Spanish classes. You may recall, administrators and counselors are divided up by the student's last name. In addition to your student's teacher, please feel free to follow up with the Admin/Counselor team listed below if you have any questions or concerns:

Student's last name

A - Gi   Andrea Hillman (Dean of Students) / Kay Hutchinson (Counselor)
GL-O    Bernie Gibson (Asst. Principal) / Dorothy Hay (Counselor)
P - Z    Marsha Denton (Asst. Principal) / Lynn Davidson (Counselor)

Yep...Dress Code again! This is a heads up. Once school starts we will again be setting the tone for acceptable clothing at school. The phrase I use with students is, "your clothing needs to be acceptable for school or work". If they don't know what acceptable clothing is for these environments, then it our job as responsible adults to teach them. Please talk with your student about what is acceptable. Below is a cheat sheet for conversation.

Shorts: As long as the fingertips on a student's extended arm while it hangs naturally down along their side.
No undergarments
are to be showing (boxers, bras, bra starps, thongs, etc.)
No exposed stomachs, cleavage, and shoulders
(tube tops, spaghetti straps are not acceptable)
Tobacco, alcohol and drug
messages are not allowed.

If a student has a problem dressing acceptably for school, we have long athletic shorts given to us by a Liberty parent and really cool t-shirts for them to wear. Please also expect a call home from us to discuss the issue. Detention, Saturday school, etc. may follow if a student demonstrates a pattern of not following what we believe are reasonable rules.

Drug & Alcohol Seminar - Tuesday,  August 28th, 7:00PM - Liberty Gymnasium

The Issaquah School District requires ALL student athletes to attend a Drug & Alcohol Seminar prior to competing. The Liberty High School administration wants to invite parents to attend this seminar. We also encourage you to use this seminar as an opportunity to discuss drug and alcohol issues with your student. The seminar is Tuesday evening, September 28th, at 7:00PM, Curt Marsh, http://www.curtmarsh.com/bio.html , former Superbowl Champion Oakland Raider and Snohomish High School / UW graduate, will be our guest speaker.  We are encouraging ALL athletes from Fall, Winter, and Spring to attend our Fall seminar to hear Curt's message.

So, if you know you will be turning out for a sport this year, or are thinking about turning out, join us Tuesday evening for one hour in the Liberty Gymnasium.

Freshman Parents and students: Freshman orientation is Monday, August 27th from 8AM -noon in the gym. Parents do not need to attend. We LINK upper classmen with small groups of freshman. Each upper classmen has approximately ten freshman students in their LINK group. It is a chance for an orientation to the building and a chance to learn from experienced students about the way Liberty High School works. Over the course of the first year, the LINK crew will sponsor events to help freshman transition into the high school. In addition, it has been reported to me that upper classmen will be calling freshman over the next few days to invite them to the orientation. Please have your freshman student attend if they are available.
