Godspell

Liberty High School’s Patriot Players re‐envision the ultimate 1970’s musical, Godspell, this spring. Featuring classic folk‐rock songs such as Day by Day and By My Side, Godspell has been a mainstay of American musical theatre since its off‐ Broadway debut in 1971. According to composer Steven Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden) and author John‐Michael Tebelak, Godspell, though based on the Gospel of Matthew, is primarily about the formation of a loving community. Liberty’s production approaches the script as literature rather than scripture, focusing on the need for human connections in the information age, when so many of us—especially youth—are increasingly isolated. Cultural references have been updated based on improvisations with the students, and choreographer Jimmy Scheider has infused the dancing with a dynamic hip‐hop flavor and Stomp‐like rhythm sections.

Performances: April 25th 7:30; April 26th 7:30; May 1st 7:30; May 2nd 7:30 and May 3rd 2:30 and 7:30.

Greetings, Godspell Company:

As you know, this will be our last week of rehearsal before Spring break, and after the break we only have a week until techs. I am usually in some state of panic at this point in the process, but this year my panic level is higher than usual. Due to a combination of several circumstances (including, I must admit, my own inefficiency at times) we are seriously behind schedule. We should definitely be able to do a fully-blocked run-through by the end of the week so that the week before techs can be devoted to fixing and cleaning up—but I fear there’s no way we’ll get it all staged by Friday, though we’re going to try! I am telling you all this to explain why (1) everyone is pretty much called all week and (2) I am begging you not to add any conflicts to the weeks before or after Spring break, and even to get rid of any conflicts you already have on the schedule if you possibly can. My apologies, and my thanks for your understanding.

A special thanks to Bob Peterson and Mike Newgard for hauling the scaffolding on Friday afternoon, and for everyone who attended the work party on Saturday. Walter was very pleased with the turnout and your productivity.
