Four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warnings. Pay attention to these warning signs:

  • Suicide threats, direct and indirect

  • Obsession with death

  • Poems, essays and drawings that refer to death

  • Dramatic change in personality or appearance

  • Irrational, bizarre behavior

  • Overwhelming sense of guilt, shame or reflection

  • Changed eating or sleeping patterns

  • Severe drop in school performance

  • Giving away cherished belongings

  • Drug and alcohol abuse

  • Violent reactions, rebellious behavior, running away

  • Loss of interest in fun activities

  • Intolerance for praise or rewards

  • Prior attempt at suicide

  • Family history of suicide

  • Verbal hints such as "I wont be a problem to you much longer; Nothing matters; it's no use; I won't see you again; I wish I was never born"
