10-12 Year Course Code: INT500 Tech Prep class
This full year course focuses on the physical medicine/sports medicine aspects
of health care. Participants will have the opportunity to study and have
hands-on experiences in the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic
injuries. Students are in the classroom for one period and learn related skills
through lab participation after school while working with school athletes and
instructor in the training room. A minimum of 25 after school hours will be
required for the academic school year. Students may option for ninety hours of
lab experience earning an additional .5 credit for Sports Medicine Lab
(Successful completion of Sports Medicine I & II classroom plus 180 Sports
Medicine Lab will earn a WVSMA certificate of completion). Students will also be
certified in Responding to Emergencies First Aid, CPR and AED. Students will go
on a field trip to the University of Washington to observe the operation of a
collegiate training room and learn about Medical Science careers. Students will
complete a job shadow with a local community health care facility such as a
hospital or physical therapy clinic. Job shadow hours will count toward the 25
hour after school requirement. Students will learn taping techniques, manual
rehabilitation exercises, use of modalities (electrical stimulation & ultra
sound) and Massage therapy. Students will select credit for one of the following
choices: Physical Education, Occupational Education or Elective credit. Fees:
ASB card and $30.00 will be required for supplies.

11-12 Year Course Code: INT503 Tech Prep class
This full year course allows students to experience a more advanced physical
medicine/sports medicine aspect of health care. The objective of the Advanced
Sports Medicine class is to apply skills learned from the Beginning Sports
Medicine class, while working independently with the athletic teams. Advanced
class students will assist in the education of first year students, instructing
and monitoring lab and field experiences. Students are in the classroom for one
period and learn related skills through lab participation after school while
working with school athletes and instructor in the training room. Ninety hours
of lab experience will be required for students not seeking the additional one
credit Sports Medicine Lab class (Successful completion of Sports Medicine I &
II classroom plus 180 Sports Medicine Lab will earn a WVSMA certificate of
completion). Students will have an opportunity to travel and compete at the
Washington Vocational Sports Medicine State Competition held during second
Semester. Students will earn one Occupational Education credit or Physical
Education credit for the Sports Medicine II classroom and one Elective or
Occupational Education credit for the Lab Experience class. Fees: ASB card and
$30.00 will be required for supplies. Prerequisite: Sports Medicine I. 1 or 2
Credits: 1 credit for Sports Medicine II classroom; 1 credit for Sports Medicine

12 Year Course Code: INT505
This full year course allows students to experience a more advanced physical
medicine/sports medicine aspect of health care. The objective of Sports Medicine
3 is to apply skills learned from the Advanced Sports Medicine class, while
working independently developing Sports Medicine instructional materials and
research projects. Students will attend class with the Advanced Sports Medicine
students while completing independent learning projects. Students will be
required to write abstract article papers, develop sports medicine learning
activities, develop Athletic Training practice examination questions and other
specialized projects. Credit will be given for completion of one semester for
one-half a credit or two semesters for one credit. Students will earn
Occupational or Elective credit
Prerequisite: Sports Medicine 2.

SPORTS MEDICINE LAB
11-12 Year Course Code: INT504
Students may sign up for this credit simultaneously with the Advanced Sports
Medicine class or take this course independently as a third year student. Credit
will be given for completion of after school hours. Students will be required to
be the head student trainer for one athletic team and the assistant student
trainer for a team during another season. Students will be encouraged to seek
internships within local community health care facilities such as hospitals,
physical therapy clinics and high school/college/professional training rooms.
Internships may also occur in other specialty areas, such as massage therapy,
chiropractic medicine, EMT, strength/aerobic training, dental care, or
dietetics. Approved internship experiences will count toward the after school
requirement. Students will be required to keep a journal reporting what they
have learned during their work experience activities and a log of their hours
worked. Work supervisor will periodically review progress and work experience
with the students. The course instructor will make periodic visits to students
and employers at off campus worksites. Professionalism and reliability will be
emphasized. Students will receive one-half or one Elective or Occupational
Education credit for the Sports Medicine Lab class. One –Half or One Full Year
Credit in Addition to Credit earned for Sports Medicine I or II. Fee: ASB card.
PERSONAL TRAINER
10-12 Semester Course Code: INT520
This course is designed for students interested in personal fitness or
considering a career as a strength coach or personal trainer. Successful
completion of the course work will prepare students for subsequent collegiate
courses and passing the National Strength and Conditioning Specialist
examination. Students who pass the NSCA exam will earn the credential of being
an NSCA Personal Trainer or Strength Coach. Students will be required to
instruct and lead other students in exercise programs (i.e. Weight Training,
Plyometrics, Pilates, Yoga). Students will use the classroom to learn the basic
principles of anatomy, physiology, kinesology and nutrition and use the gym to
apply this information by participation in a variety of training and
conditioning exercises. Prerequisite: 9th Grade PE and currently taking Weight
Training & Conditioning or Fitness & Conditioning, or Teacher approval.
Cross-credited as either Occupational or PE or Elective credit. Fee: ASB card.
