Welcome to COE:  Keep this in your notebook

COE means Collection of Evidence

I hope this will be a successful year for you in math.  I have outlined some guidelines and expectations that are designed to help you have a positive and productive experience in math this year.  I look forward to working with each one of you.

Philosophy

The purpose of this course is to expand your understanding of mathematics, so that you are able to create a Collection of Evidence to submit to the state as part of your graduation requirement.

  • Attend class regularly and arrive on time
  • Work hard and take responsibility for your learning
  • Complete ALL assignments
  • Maintain quality study habits

By employing the above habits, you will succeed in this course and others.  I will also be working hard to make sure that you have all of the tools you need to succeed.

Guidelines:

1)  Be Prompt:  When the bell rings you should be in your assigned seat and ready to start class.

2)  Be Prepared:  Always come to class with a pencil, pen, paper, and calculator.

3)  Be Respectful: Please treat yourself, other students, and myself with respect.  Recognize that

the teacher’s work area (desk, computer, TV, file cabinet, etc.) is off-limits to students except

with specific permission.  Learn and comply with the computer use expectations.

Please keep the area around your desk clean.

4)  Be Responsible: You are responsible for keeping track of assignment due dates, turning your

work in on time, and finding out what notes, activities or assignments were missed if you are

absent.  It is your responsibility to arrange a time with your teacher when you will be able to makeup all Collection-of-Evidence assignments you’ve missed due to your absence.

General Expectations:

1) Food and Drink:  No eating.  Drinking is allowed with a container that can be closed so that if it is

knocked on the floor no liquid spills out.

2) Leaving the Room:  For emergency or office request only.  You will have five hall passes per

semester.  They may be used for restroom visits or tardies.  You will need to sign in and out when you enter the class or leave the class after the bell rings.  That is, sign in when you are tardy and sign out when you leave the room during class.   End of class dismissal will occur when everyone is seated and then dismissed by the teacher.

3) Excused Absence work:  Your responsibility is to find out what we did while you were gone.

See the teacher before or after school to ask specific questions on work if needed.  You will             have an extra day per day absent to make up missed work.  All missed COE work samples

must be made up after school.

4) Substitute Teacher:  Please treat any guest or visitor to the classroom with the utmost courtesy

and respect.  The substitute teacher has the same authority as any other teacher and will

enforce the classroom rules and expectations as outlined.

Discipline:

Appropriate behavior is very important to everyone’s learning and therefore important to me.  Tardies, truancies, and disruptive behavior will be handled fairly and in accordance with school policy, including detentions, referrals, removal from class, Saturday school and/or parental contact.

Grading

70%    Collection of Evidence

What the state requires: A collection of evidence or COE is an alternative to the WASL.  The best 8-12 work samples will be chosen to be placed in a binder and turned into the State for scoring.  The binders will be scored by the state.  The maximum score is a 128.  Students who score above 78 will receive a passing score on their binder.  Students who score between 70 and 77 do not pass on their first attempt but may submit an augmented collection next semester.  Students that score 69 or lower will not pass the COE.  Students who do not meet state requirements may still graduate but will not receive a certificate of academic achievement (i.e., CAA).

How COE effects your grade in this course:

Each student will be completing a collection of evidence.  Students will complete one work sample every 2 - 3 daysCollection of evidence assignments will be completed in class in a test like environment.  All COE items are your individual best work.  Students that do not complete a sufficient collection will not pass the course.    Your participation in completing your COE will be used to determine your grade in this course.  Your proficiency in the math in your COE will be used as the criteria for meeting the state requirements for graduation.  Doing your “best work” for all the assignments in the COE is an appropriate strategy to meet the state requirements.  .

20% Assignments

·        Students can expect most of the class work to be completed in class.  This is why attendance and limiting time out of class are very important.

·        Many critical concepts are developed through class explorations and activities.  It is important that classwork and homework represent students’ best work and effort.  All work is expected to be legible, organized and done in pencil.  All graphs should be on graph paper.

·        Assignments will be graded on completeness, effort, work shown and corrections.

·        You will be given a week to complete all the missed assignments due to an excused absence.

10% Participation

Students will receive two points per day.

1.      Arriving on time ready to work and not leaving the room during the period

2.      Participating to their potential in all class activities

Extra Credit:

Extra credit is only assigned by the teacher and offered to the entire class.  There are no instances in which an individual can earn extra credit.  Special requests for extra credit cannot be met.  Students should be completing work as it is assigned in order to be successful on future assignments and tests.  All students can earn participation points extra credit just by arriving on time, working in class and not using their five passes.

Calculators:

It is highly recommended that students have a calculator for this class.
