Courses Basic Skills- The reading, writing, and language skills the students will need to succeed in the community and work environments. Curriculums used are "Language!", "In The Know", "Lifetimes" and thematic units. Vocational Math- The math skills the students will need to succeed in the community. This class focuses on how to understand the problem and find the answers using the proper tools such as a calendar, calculator, tape measure, measuring and weight along with basic math skills. Social Studies - This class focuses first on the social skills needed in the world along with customs and traditions of world cultures. The students learn map reading skills as well as geography and history of the area being studied. The themes rotate through state history, US history, World Cultures and European Cultures. Vocational Science - The students learn about how physical science works and how it can help them. They learn about chemicals used at home and in the workplace. The students learn about caring for our environment and they learn about their bodies. Adaptive Physical Education - This PE class is for the students who cannot dress or participate with general education classes. Focus points are social skills, habitual regular exercise, and back yard games. Health - This class meets the state requirement for sex education. the curriculum that is used is called "Family Life and Sexual Health" or F.L.A.S.H. produced by the King County Department of Health. Another resource is titled "Taking Care of Myself" by Mary Wrobel. The state law allows students to be exempt from this curriculum only after the parent has personally reviewed the curriculum and written a letter to that effect. Independent Living - This class focuses on the individual skills the student needs to be self-sufficient. Some students learn to keep a budget and balance a checkbook, others learn how to feed themselves. Career Attitudes - The students use skills that are needed in the workplace. Many crafts are done while practicing fine motor skills, following directions, aesthetics and neatness along with self-advocacy. Community Based Learning- Students work at internships in the community learning how to perform in a work environment. Juniors usually work 2 afternoons a week and seniors 4 afternoons. The students change jobs at semester so they learn about different jobs and skills.
