English 10

There are three primary elements in this class: 1) Daily Warm-Ups  2) Reading  and 3) Writing. All of these components are designed to help students become better readers, writers, and communicators. The Grading system for this class is described below. When students miss school they will need to make-up the assignments and in class work that they missed. The Make-Up Work policy is described below.

  Daily Warm-Ups

On most days students will complete a warm-up exercise designed to review previous concepts and to work on new ones.

  Reading

We will be reading several novels. Some of these novels are the same as what 10th graders in the district read while a couple are novels which aren't necessarily read in other 10th grade classes in our district but have proven effective with 10th graders in the resource setting.

These are some of the books/authors we may study:

  - Night Monster
  - Lord of the Flies - Holes
  - Old Man and the Sea - Tolkien
  - Macbeth - Anne Frank
  - Harry Potter Series - Midwife's Apprentice

We will also be working on Vocabulary using a vocabulary workbook.

  Grading

Students will earn points for all the work they do in class. They will earn points based on effort, completeness, and correctness.

Warm-Ups Work Books Reading Test/Quizzes Projects
10-20 Points 10-30 Points 10-20 Points 20-40 Points 20-100 Points

  Make-Up Work

When students miss class they need to make up the work they missed. Sometimes they will do the same assignment that was done by the rest of the class when they were gone; other times they will need to make arrangements with the teacher to make-up work that was done as as a class while they were absent. Make-up work from an excused absence that is completed in a timely manner, (within 3 sessions from the day the student was absent), can count as full credit. Unexcused absences or work turned in after the 3rd class period back , will count less than full credit.
