Study Skills

There are three primary elements in this class: 1) Lessons  2) Silent Reading  3) Planner  4) Time on Task. Students will receive credit and a letter grade for what they do in Study Skills. The Grading system is described below. When students miss school they will need to make-up the assignments and in class work that they missed. The Make-Up Work policy is described below.

  Lessons

On most days students will complete a lesson designed to increase their individual academic skills in the areas of Study Skills, Math, Reading, and/or Writing.

  Silent Reading

On most days students will spend 15-25 minutes reading/studying silently. Students are expected to bring something to read/study quietly to class every day. If they don't bring anything then they will have to choose form the materials available in the classroom.

  Planner

All students in Study Skills are expected to bring and keep a planner. If students lose their planner they will be expected to get another one or to make one.

This is an example of what the planner should look like at a minimum.

Planner Example:

- Every Period listed

- A brief description of what they did in each class

- Homework that needs to be completed

- Tests, quizzes, and major assignments should be listed including when they are due and what they may cover.

  Time on Task

  Grading

Students will earn points for all the work they do in class. They will earn points based on effort, completeness, and correctness.

Lessons Silent Reading Planner Time on Task
10-20 Points 10-20 Points 10-20 Points 10-20 Points

  Make-Up Work

When students miss class they need to make up the work they missed. Sometimes they will do the same assignment that was done by the rest of the class when they were gone; other times they will need to make arrangements with the teacher to make-up work that was done as as a class while they were absent. Make-up work from an excused absence that is completed in a timely manner, (within 3 sessions from the day the student was absent), can count as full credit. Unexcused absences or work turned in after the 3rd class period back , will count less than full credit.
